2000, THE FACE OF THE PLANET

Pier Paolo Strona presents this calendar,
full of charming pictures,
so that the memory of this wonderful planet
on the threshold of the third millennium remains alive.
The pictures of the calendar want to symbolically frame the reality of planet earth at the end of the second millennium of the christian age, showing the present and looking at the future in an optimistic and positive way: the scene of nature and the presence of man are the thread running through the work.
The cover features the picture of a skyscraper reaching up to the sky, a work of man but at the same time, part of nature through the reflections of the clouds on the windows. It aims to be the symbol of a future to build under the sign of unity and solidarity, and not a new Tower of Babel generating division and incommunicability.
The flight of the seagull, which opens the third millennium in january, symbolizes freedom, basis of every good end, while choosing the goals to reach, strict towards ourselves amd tolerant and respectful of the others.
The presence of man is recalled again in two pictures: in february, an urban landscape in which however nature is not choked down, but it is strongly featured with reddish shades of the sun at dusk towering over black chimneys and winter trees; in may, a group of children totally identifying their game with life itself, an example of positive way of life, dawn of a good age.
Nature becomes then the leading character featuring some pictures of animals: two colourful and rounded ducks, closed to each other in their nest in april, a funny cow sunbathing in Corsica, in august, a flock returning to the sheepflod in september.
Finally the delicate view of a green meadow, covered with trees, in march, of a northern summer sunset in june; the magnificent view of a raging sea-storm, in july, of a blazing sunset sky bordered by serrated mountains profile, in october, and a snow-covered in its own space and time landscape, indefinite and infinite place of loneliness and beauty, in november.
December, Christmas month, reminds us the event of this end of millennium, the appearance of the Hale-Bopp comet, in the fantastic scene of a stars-spangled sky where everything revolves and moves, dynamic view of the univers, symbol of its energy.
