The organ music recorded on this CD has been selected bearing in mind the features and the sound quality of the organ they were played on. The aim was to show the wide variety of sounds which could be drawn from the registers and their combinations. Moreover it should not be forgotten that much of the vitality of this music comes from the special quality of the sound of ancient italian organs.

The organ, built in 1748 by Liborio Grisanti, a famous organ-builder from Naples, for the Confraternita in San Michele di Asti, was restaured in 1962 by the Emilio Piccinelli firm, Ponteranica (Bergamo). It was transferred together with the main altar to the church of St. Cristina, San Carlo square, downtown Turin. The organ has one manual keyboard with 45 keys, 4 octaves from "do" to "do" (the first octave is short), 11 registers and a pedal board with one short octave always connected to the manual keyboard. The keyboard is mechanically connected to the pipes.
Registers: Principal (P), VIII, XV, XIX, XXII, XXVI, XXIX, Flute VIII, Flute XII, Cornet (2 octaves), the Human Voice.

The church of St. Cristina, designed by Carlo Cognengo di Castellamonte in accordance with the wishes of Maria Cristina of France, was built in the XVIIth century. The facade was added by Filippo Juvarra in the early XVIIIth century.

The photograph on the cover, by Nicola Strona, shows a view of the Liborio Grisanti organ in St. Cristina's church, Turin.

Audiophile recording made in 2010

Pier Paolo Strona is a civil engineer, researcher in the field of the numerical models of structures, photographer and author of books and calendars. He is a pianist performing both in Italy and abroad, with a repertoire ranging from the most important classical composers to ragtime, Latin American as well as asian music. http://pierpaolo-strona.arty.it

Efrem Mirolo is an aerospace engineer and an art lover. He paints, plays different instruments and takes photos. Music accompanies his life and inside him it blends with science leading to the design of loudspeakers, recording systems and to their "musical" set-up.

Thanks to Guido Donati, who teaches the organ and organ composition at the 'Conservatorio Statale di Musica G.Verdi' in Turin, and Luigi Malandra, family doctor and organist, who gave helpful suggestions and advice which clarify many points of interpretation.
